Christmas in Austria | Austria Wedding Photographer
As most of you know, I am currently in Austria celebrating Christmas with my Austrian family. It is my second year spending the holidays away from my home. Christmas celebrations are VERY different in Austria than back in the US. A normal Christmas in the US includes celebrating Christmas Eve at either my parents or Aunt & Uncle's house with lots of food and wine. We would then go to Midnight Mass. On Christmas day, we have breakfast (pancakes and pepper bacon usually) followed by opening all the gifts that Santa delivered that morning. After all the gifts (and stockings!) have been opened, we would head to my Grandma's or Memere and Pepere's homes to spend time with our extended family. A normal Christmas in Austria includes going out for drinks at the Christmas Market and bars with friends on the eve of Christmas Eve (sometimes until the wee hours of the morning). Christmas Eve morning we head down to the Christmas Market again to spend more time with friends and family. Early afternoon, everyone heads back home to enjoy some small snacks, followed by dinner and wine. After dinner, we open up the gifts that the Christkind (Christ-Child) has brought. The next day, Christmas, it is very quiet and we relax most of the day. This year, we decided to go bowling with friends at night. So as you can see, Christmas is celebrated in different ways in two different countries.
Above are a few photographs I took around Klagenfurt, Austria since we arrived. The first few are from downtown and the Christmas Market. The next ones are of the Christmas Tree candles and sparklers getting lit. The last few are from the big lake on Christmas Day.
