What to wear for your family photos
Say hello to the number one question that I receive from my family portrait clients. What do I wear for my family portrait session? I am here to share three simple suggestions:
Neutrals and cool earthy tones are always my go to’s but may not be yours.
My mind works differently than yours, especially as a photographer. I see color as a way to bounce light back into the eyes of that special someone. Light reflects off of everything that surrounds us. Our clothing is no exception. I generally recommend neutrals or a cooler earth tone color palette for family portraits, especially newborn sessions, because those colors reflect a softer tone back onto the skin of those you are close with in your portraits. What are cool earth tones? Think grays and blues. I personally navigate to these colors, but that doesn’t mean you do as well. My mind is always thinking about the way light works and the way it reflects. If you love color, add it in some way to your look. Break up the color with a neutral top if you will be holding a newborn or small child close. I found this maroon dress that I loved for our own portrait session. To break up the color, I opted for a cream sweater and hat.
Dress for the Weather
Nothing is worse than being too cold or too hot during your session. Glistening skin can be beautiful, but beads of sweat rolling down your face… not so much. If the weather is unpredictable, bring some extra layers, scarves, hats and/or blankets to make sure everyone involved is comfortable. If your session is inside, you have the luxury to control the temperature to your liking.
Dress Up!
Just because your pajamas were your go to in 2020 does not mean you should wear it for your your portrait session. Most families have their family photographed once a year or every other year. I want you to feel extra special for it by dressing up. Wear that long dress that you have been eyeing for a while, especially if it is already in your closet. I forgot I even had one in 2020. A cute top and jeans also works well. It shouldn’t feel uncomfortable, it should make you feel special and confident.
